Birdies Among the Vines explores the history of golf in the winemaking areas of South Australia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Specifically, the book describes golf being played on privately owned courses co-located with vineyards and wineries. The owners and developers of these properties were predominantly first- and second-generation Scottish and German migrants. Together, they founded the state’s wine industry and progressed the game of golf.

The book begins with summaries of worldwide golf and wine evolution, followed by a chapter about the beginnings of golf and wine in the Colony of New South Wales. That is where the relationship between the two began in Australia – together as the enterprises of Scottish immigrants. The book goes on to describe the origins of golf in a variety of South Australian locales, including the winegrowing regions of Oakbank, McLaren Vale, Willunga, Magill, Mitcham, Beaumont, Gawler, Clare, Angaston, Kapunda, Eden Valley, Greenock and Tanunda. Additionally, because of its importance to the game's growth throughout the state, the origins of the South Australian Golf Association are also examined.
